Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)

It is believed that in polycystic ovarian syndrome follicles produce more anti-mullerian hormone per antral follicle than in normal ovaries. In a study done at the Homerton University Hospital to be presented shortly, AMH tests were done on women who had polycystic ovarian syndrome, ovaries that looked polycystic and those who had normal ovaries. It was observed that the anti-mullerian hormone and the antral follicle count were significantly higher in the women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

It is also believed that rather than this being just being increased in the number of eggs, there is also some belief that each of these small follicles may be secreting AMH, thus, raising the AMH in polycystic ovaries.

This may give us a better idea in to understanding how polycystic ovaries occur and needs further investigation.
